Duties of a Brew Master
What exactly will you do in this job? Your duties at breweries will be fairly diverse. In addition to creating the beverages, you should also enjoy working with people: customers and staff. You’ll need to supervise a crew of workers, oversee the quality of your beers, and make sure the place is cleaned up after processes are completed. You’ll need to understand the chemical process of fermentation in order to craft the best tasting lagers and ales. If you are a head brewer, you’re going to have to order supplies such as kegs and ingredients, manage employees, advertise, and attend brew-fests, tastings, and conferences to stay abreast of new developments in your field. Sound like fun? It sure does.
As fun as it sounds, you will need to be well trained to be a brewmaster in breweries. In fact, you should go to college to obtain your degree if you want to be as knowledgeable and marketable as possible. A four-year degree in one of the sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, marketing, and microbiology will be a huge boon when searching for your perfect job. Marketing would also be a good academic major if you’re planning to own your own pub or microbrewery.
That’s Not All
In addition to a bachelor’s degree, you’ll need experience and the right personality to become a brewmaster. You should work in entry-level positions at breweries for a few years before applying for the position of head brewer. As far as personality traits go, you should be a team player, have a passion for microbrews, and be a good communicator.
