The Commercial Appeal And Hitler Operate Much In The Same Fashion

The Commercial Appeal or as those of us in Memphis call it, The Communist Appeal, has published an online database of TN handgun carry permit holders. I am none too happy with this. They treat us as if we are criminals when all we did was go through the process to be able to carry a handgun on our person. I am vocal about being a permit holder as is BCR, but others may not want to be singled out. How many employers will search the database to check on their employees? I can imagine more than one person may leave their handgun in their car while at work. The companies these people work for could check the database and find out these employees have permits. Then they search the vehicle of the employee and find the firearm. This employee loses their job because the Commercial Appeal decided to publish this data. You can and will argue that they should not possess a firearm on company property, but I say my right or the right of anyone else to be able to defend themselves does not cease in the company parking lot. A few states have ruled it unconstitutional for a company to prohibit a handgun from being kept in a locked vehicle on company property. To hell with the Commercial Appeal and I hope everyone with a half a brain drops their subscription to this pile of filth.

UPDATE Pat McGarrity from the TFA was on Mike Fleming’s program yesterday to talk about the Commercial Appeal. Drake and Zeke, a popular Memphis morning talk-show, read listener emails about the same subject. Though their comments were subdued they did state that this database was definitely invasive and should not be posted. Blue Collar Muse covered the story as well as The Ol’ Broad. This is getting a ton of play around the state and hopefully the Communist Appeal with recognize their error and remove the database from their site.

I canceled my subscription. Have been a 7 day delivery for 9 years. They asked me why, I told them why. They said “over a little thing like that”? I said “Little”.
They called me back 1 minute later and said they wanted me to talk to someone about the issue so they could explain it. I said ok, but I still wanted to cancel at this time. I called the person, and blah, blah, blah. All one sided. When he couldn’t make his point and I had him pinned up against the wall using his same example he gave me, he said that he had another call and had to go. I haven’t stop my cancellation and I am not going to. Going to get my news from the web. I hope Commercial Appeal goes under. I bet the lose alot of subscriptions from this. How many are they going to gain from this stunt…….”0″. Burn Commercial Appeal for making my life public without my consent. Even though it is public record, you have to go to much greater trouble to get the information and most people don’t know how to do that. Isn’t it nice that the Commercial Appeal helped them with that.

I must disagree on several points.

I believe that we need and should have an Open State Government. If the State government gives someone something and I pay any type of tax in the state then I should be able to see what they are spending it on. If they start closing the public records for this, what is to stop them from any and every thing.

I believe the Right To Private Property supersedes your right to do ‘what ever you wish’ on that property (if it is not Your private property). I own property and I can tell ANYONE that comes on that property that they can or can not bring Item X on that property. Then they can choose to do what I ask or leave. The same goes for an employer’s property. It is Their property not yours and not the states. No one is forcing you to work there.

But the solution is so simple…. The state can pass a law that allows Any adult ( same type requirements .. no mental case, violent or drug cases…) to carry a weapon concealed or even out in the open. – No License Required!

  4. I disagree considering that I PAY FOR THIS PERMIT!!! This has nothing to do with open government and all to do with me wanting someone to know if I am carrying a firearm. This puts me in jeopardy. This is not my or your tax dollars at work.

Getting a job somewhere else is no excuse either. My car is my property correct or not? Therefore I am in my property carrying my firearm so I am not infringing on your property rights or is your property more important than my property?

  5. BCR says:

Okay Mickey, lets make the drivers license, car tags and everything else of a personal nature retained by the State public record. The government forces us to provide information that is of a personal nature, so lets put it all out in the public domain in the interest of open government.

Like Austin said, I have no problem with people knowing I carry a gun. If an employer does not want me carrying a gun, then I simply won’t work for them. Just like in 2006 Hickory Hill Mall sponsored an event for candidates but stated that even permit holders could not carry their guns. I did not attend.

Open government is a wonderful concept, as long as it does not mean releasing the private information that I am forced by law to provide them.

tags are public, you can go to the tag place, pay 1 $ or maybe it is more and get the name and address of the registered tag. or at least you used to could.

The state has no business knowing alot of the stuff they know about us, I agree. Like SSN , Tennessee has no business knowing ours ….

Like I said, be like Vermont? Open/concealed carry for all, no Fee or license required.

You guys are blaming the wrong group. The Communist Appalled is excising the Freedom Of Speech. You should blame the Democrats in the TN legislation way back when the laws allows the access of this info.
(I can not believe I am defending the CA)
    Hello World!

  8. Is it free speech or invasion of privacy? The Commercial Appeal chose to print it so they are to blame for this mess. You can chose what to and what not to print. No one forced them to print it. They did it because they hate us gun toters.

  9. BCR says:

They can exercise their right to free speech, and we can exercise our right not to listen to it by not buying the stupid paper. If they come out next week and publish the names of every woman in Memphis (or Tennessee) who has had a legal abortion, then at least they would be an honest broker. Or better yet, print the names of everyone arrested in Shelby County so that citizens can be aware of risky behaviour individuals, not the names of people defending themselves against them. They are a bunch of hypocrites making fodder of citizens because they are anti-2nd Amendment…period.

  10. BCR says:

To save everyone the trouble of searching for me in the database:

    Last Name FARMER
    First Name JOHN
    Middle Name STEPHEN
    Suffix
    Birth year 1954
    City MEMPHIS
    State TN
    ZIP 38104
    Issue Date 5/21/2007
    Expiration Date 5/13/2011

A proud practitioner of my second amendment rights. Of course the issue date is my last renewal date. I transferred my Indiana permit to Tennessee shortly after returning in 2003.

  11. Mickey says:

Renew at 6 months, it will be easier for you….
