Bloggers, Show Some Responsibility #tcot

I understand freedom of speech, and I would be the first to defend the right of anyone to promote and/or publish information related to the government’s activities. However, if you are one of these people, I must take exception.

TSA asked that the document be removed from the Federal Business Opportunity site on Dec. 6 after the security lapse was reported in a blog. But copies of the document — with the redacted portions exposed — circulated on the Internet and remain posted on other Web sites not controlled by the government. – FOX

A blogger discovered that the TSA had posted an online document that was not properly redacted. Some people still have versions of it on the net and I suspect the damage has already been done. Bad judgement folks. The proper way to have handled this would have been to call the TSA and told them what you found and then after it was removed, write your blog story and be the hero who may have saved a fellow American’s life. Instead, you are now the person who gave sensitive information to our enemies and I sure hope it is not someone you love who dies as a result.

I had this happen to me in my FOIA efforts. The US Army sent me some documents that were poorly redacted and after scanning them, you could read the writing under the marker. I called them up and notified them of their error and awaited replacements before posting them on the net for others to download.

Government and military workers are human beings just like we are, and they blow it sometimes. Don’t be the ‘gotcha guy’ and endanger your fellow citizens in doing so. Handle it the right way and you end up being the hero that may have saved a life, not some jackass who does not give a crap about their fellow human beings safety.
