Dealergate

I have been watching a story that actually originated with bloggers in recent days. I’ve been waiting for some confirmation of it before writing about it myself simply because it is such a serious situation. BCR watched the moves by the Obama Administration to take over the U.S. auto industry with a great deal of concern and fear. The whole affair has been about moving that industry towards the goals of Gore’s “global warming” agenda. Now it seems that beyond the social engineering, there are some sinister political objectives as well.

In regards to the Chrysler dealership closures, WND reports:

WND reviewed the list of 789 closing franchises and databases of political donors and found that of dealership majority owners making contributions in the November 2008 election, less than 10 percent gifted to Democrats while 90 percent gave substantial sums to Republican candidates.

The listed franchise owners contributed at least $450,000 to Republican presidential candidates and the GOP, while only $7,970 was donated to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign and $2,200 was given to Sen. John Edwards’ campaign.

Obama received a combined total of only $450 in donations – $250 from dealer Jane Baldock in Wenatchee, Wash., and $200 from Waco, Texas, dealer Jeffrey Hunter.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Evidence appears to be mounting that the Obama administration has systematically targeted for closing Chrysler dealers who contributed to Repubicans. What started earlier this week as mainly a rumbling on the Right side of the Blogosphere has gathered some steam today with revelations that among the dealers being shut down are a GOP congressman and closing of competitors to a dealership chain partly owned by former Clinton White House chief of staff Mack McLarty.

“It’s an outrage. It’s not about me. I’m going to be fine,” said Buchanan, the dealership’s majority owner. “You’re talking over 100,000 jobs. We’re supposed to be in the business of creating jobs, not killing jobs,” Buchanan told News 10, a local Florida television station.

Florida Rep. Vern Buchanan learned from a House colleague that his Venice, Florida, dealership is on the hit list. Buchanan also has a Nissan franchise paired with the Chrysler facility in Venice.

There is a lot of smoke billowing around this issue and one can only hope that there is not a raging fire behind it. Bloggers are leading the way on this and I’ll post a series of links below for more information. Needless to say, this is very serious if it turns out to indeed be true.

Did Obama Choose the Chrysler Dealers to Close Based on Politics?

In the Memphis area, only one dealership is on the closure list, Southland Chrysler-Jeep owned by John W. Roy. According to FEC records, Roy has made only one political contribution and that was in 2008 to the CHRYSLER MINORITY DEALERS ASSOCIATION INC POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE for $1,000.00. This certainly does not fit the pattern that others are finding. However, Southhaven, MS definitely did NOT vote Obama in 2008,

Update: More Roy contributions.

JOHN W ROY (SOUTHLAND CHRYSLER CORP), (Zip code: 38125) $250 to HAROLD FORD JR FOR CONGRESS COMMITTEE on 11/26/96
John W. Roy, (Zip code: 38125) $500 to RE-ELECT HAROLD FORD JR on 11/04/02

Nope, he does not look like a Republican contributor to me. Southland also made the Black Enterprise list of the Nation’s Largets Black-Owned Businesses (#88 Auto Dealers) so I am not so sure this supports the hypothesis very well. Quite the opposite to be frank. It seems like if Obama was using the closures to exempt minority businesses, he sure blew it in Southhaven.

Chrysler is planning to shut down more dealerships in Texas than in any other state – 50 of the 789 dealerships targeted for closure are in Texas.

    • El Dorado Chrysler-Jeep in McKinney
    • Frank Kent Dodge in Fort Worth
    • Grubbs Chrysler-Jeep in Bedford
    • Huffines Chrysler-Jeep in Denton
    • McNatt Dodge in Denton
    • Manuel Dodge in Richardson
    • Tommy Manuel Chrysler-Jeep in Arlington
    • Preston Chrysler-Jeep in Dallas

Chrysler dealerships aren’t the only ones scheduled to get bad news this week. General Motors Corp. says it is notifying 1,100 dealers that it will not renew their franchise agreements when they expire at the end of September of 2010.
