Sonia Sotomayor Nomination
The woman sounds qualified to me….
(CNN) — Judge Sonia Sotomayor grew up in modest circumstances and faced adversity from an early age, but she says she considers her life to be “immeasurably rich.”
Sotomayor was raised by a single mom in a public housing project in the South Bronx, not too far from the stadium of her favorite team — the New York Yankees.
Her father passed away when Sotomayor was just 9, the year after she was diagnosed with diabetes. Her mother, whom Sotomayor describes as her biggest inspiration, worked six days a week to care for her and her younger brother, and instilled in them the value of an education.
Sotomayor later graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and went on to attend Yale law school.
In her three-decade career, she has worked at nearly every level of the judicial system, and on Tuesday she became President Obama’s pick to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the Supreme Court.
The 54-year-old judge, born in the Bronx, is of Puerto Rican descent. If confirmed, she would become the first Hispanic to serve on the high court. She would also be the third female named to the Supreme Court, and the second on the current court. – CNN
There is a lot of commentary about her on the blogs this morning, so I’ll just do a linkfest below. I don’t have an opinion of her yet, since the details of her judicial record have yet to be fully vetted.
