Playing The Gay Card…Again

ENTERTAINMENT-US-AMERICANIDOL

I only sporadically kept up with American Idol this year. Like most Memphians, I cheered for the local celeb and when she was out, that was pretty much it for me.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Kris Allen’s upset victory over glam rocker Adam Lambert drew the smallest “American Idol” finale audience since 2004, slowing the television ratings juggernaut and posing questions about the future of some of its key players.

It seems that I was not alone in my ambivalence this year. All I really knew was that I did not like Adam Lambert since he killed one of my favorite Steppenwolf songs, “Born to be Wild” earlier in the season. He was also a strange looking bird. So I was definitely leaning towards the clean-cut Kris Allen who I considered a much better ‘idol’ for my kids to go crazy over than some guy who wore eye-liner.

Mild-mannered Christian versus flamboyant gay star in a pageant setting? There’s something soooo familiar about this. Presumably this means Allen will be the tabloids’ new hate object, victimized by all appropriate smears and embarrassing family revelations pertaining thereto. Now that just shows how out-of-touch I am this season. I did not know that Allen was an active Church leader.

Church worship leader Kris Allen beat out theater actor Adam Lambert for the “American Idol” title Wednesday in a come-from-behind victory that some say shouldn’t be as surprising as many are finding it to be. – Christian Post

I just thought he was a clean-cut nice guy who sang pretty good. He had the boyish good-looks that reminded me of the Davy Jones and Bobby Sherman posters my sisters used to swoon over as teenagers, so I could see his poster hanging in my daughters room. So I was totally unprepared for the controversy that now seems to be brewing.

Did Adam Lambert lose American Idol to Kris Allen because of his sexuality?

That’s the argument raging online.

“It’s difficult not to wonder if Lambert’s sexuality played a role in Allen’s victory,” the Chicago Tribune’s TV critic writes. “Though he never said whether he was gay, pictures of Lambert kissing other men appeared on the Internet during Season 8.

“If Lambert’s popularity on Idol was any indication of how tolerant and accepting America has become, his loss may indicate there’s still further to go,” continues the Tribune writer – US

Is it just me, or is the gay community throwing around the gay card anytime they don’t get their way like the blacks have played the race card over the past few decades? Let me remind people that we already have had a ‘gay’ American Idol. Reuben may have won, but it was Clay Aiken that was the one who’s career took off and yes, I did vote for him. So, what does Clay have to say about all this?

Now that it’s all over, and for the record…. I couldn’t be happier about the way AI ended this year. I only turn the show on once a season, and only to see what the set looks like each year. This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing “Ring of Fire” and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening!Gawker

Sounds pretty much like what I said. So much for the gay card.
