Reaction to President Obama’s visit to Notre Dame are starting to come in, so I thought I would start a thread for passing them along. This thread will be updated during the day.
But Obama called for “open hearts, open minds, fair-minded words” in the midst of such lasting debates.
He said the issue of abortion stands as the single greatest example of a controversy that tests Americans’ ability to respectfully seek common ground.
He said the views of the two sides of the debate are “irreconcilable”(I actally agree with that) but can be respected. – A Catholic View

Obama at Notre Dame: Hey, let’s be open-minded about child murder
Commentary:
I think Keyes was still in jail today, which is too bad. However, Ms. Roe took his place and was marched away in handcuffs. As to whether or not Obama should have been invited, I will leave that to the Catholics to debate. I only wish to address these comments from one press report.
Sunsara Taylor, a New York City resident and a member of the abortion-rights group Abortion on Demand, said outside the school’s gates that “there was a voice missing” in the controversy over Obama’s visit.
“If women don’t have a right to decide if they have a child, women aren’t free,” she said. “We need to expand abortion access and abortion rights and lift the stigma. Fetuses are not babies and women are not incubators.” – AP Yahoo
Women do have a right to decide if they have a child. There are many forms of contraception available and affordable. However, it begins first with the biology of taking a sperm into the female reproductive apparatus. Once that happens, there is a chance irregardless of the birth control method used that a pregnancy will result. So once that sperm finds its way to that egg and a viable zygote forms, then a baby begins to grow. That baby will be dependent upon its mother for live for quite a number of years to come. People can argue that a fetus is a baby all they want, but the fact remains that if anyone else kills it other than the mother (or a doctor with her consent), it is considered murder in many states.
With every right comes responsibility. I have a right to own and carry a gun. My right however ends when I use that gun to deprive another person of their property rights or right to life. A woman’s right to decide whether or not to have a baby ends once that baby begins.
The rationale is that a ‘fetus’ is just ‘property’, not a person. There was a time when we said that a ‘woman’ was the property of her husband (in some places they still do). There was a time when another human being was seen as ‘property’ and less than a person based on their socioeconomic or racial status (in some places they still do). They were wrong, and so is Ms. Taylor.
